Last Night

I tried my very best to hold it together for the kids this morning. They knew exactly why I was upset. I bit my lip, with a flush red face and held back my tears. I talked to them about the importance of being politically active as a grown ups in much more than just the presidential elections. But after I dropped them off at school, the flood hates opened. I cried from their school all the way to work. I’m shaking and trembling and sick to my stomach and don’t want to go inside. But I have to. I have to put my chin up and work. I have to go on. I have to go sell some trophies. Then I have to go home and continue to work and fight and write for freedom, for equality, for love. It has always been and maybe always will be an uphill battle. But it’s like last night the force of gravity got turned up. Today I pray, yup today I pray that we are not crushed.

Voting for Hillary Clinton

Voting for Hillary Clinton is like drinking a veggie shake.  You try to suck it down because you know it’s good for you even if the experience isn’t fun in the near term.

Shaming Unworking Men

NYTimes article on men not working:

Mr. Eberstadt would also like to intensify social pressure on the cadre of men who have stopped looking for work. “Why haven’t we had the same sort of conversation about stigmatizing or shaming unworking men that we had 20 years ago about mothers on welfare?” he said. “They were not idle; they had little kids.”

Hahahahahahaha!  As a man without a real job I get shamed all the time.  I’ve been called a charity case by my brother and law and my closest friend from college dropped out of my life because I’m low status.  One of the conservative tropes I do think is relevant is “culture of work”.  My family and friends have a huge culture of work.  If I was in a different situation where few people worked perhaps I wouldn’t feel so bad.

Church Week

Every week after I attend a church service I tend to have an extra measure of depression.  I’m not sure if it’s beamed directly from God or it’s something more mundane.  This time it was a Catholic church where we were ignored and they spent 12 minutes asking for money.  Their economic model is such that there is very little extra outlay for each additional attending member so what they should be doing is reaching out to the community.  Even if the people they get give little or no money to the roles they won’t have lost anything.  People tend to view every economic model like your relationship to the government (where you are either a net gain paying more taxes then you take or a net drain taking more).  They extrapolate this on situations where the economic model doesn’t work this way (like at a church) and do a lot of harm.  Just because you are a net drain on society doesn’t mean you are a net drain to the church but people generally don’t do the math in their heads to get this.

ArtPrize Piece

orphens

Amazing ArtPrize piece taking up a whole wall of Monroe Community Church on Congolese orphans.

ArtPrize has had a lot of pleasant surprises this year.  For colorist fiends like me Fifth Third Bank, Park Congregational Church, and The Waters Center were great.  For more introspective stuff Monroe Community Church, Fountain Street Church, the City Water Building, and Western Michigan University (by the bus station) were good.  And I hear there are many more good venues I haven’t visited.

The Senses on the Spectrum

Great post on The Realistic Autistic, A Hostile World on the way the senses are often affected in people on the spectrum:

I wish more people would be that thoughtful about their interactions with others.  Most people have no way of knowing these difficulties I’ve described, and so I’m “reclusive” or “hard to get to know” or “unsocial.”  But most days it’s a trial to go out for any reason.  If even a tenth of the people I normally deal with understood that, my life would be a lot less anxiety-inducing.

Bible for Millennials

I was messing around with the ESV API and tried to produce an online Bible that reflected the way our generation actually reads.  It still has some bugs in it but you can see it here.  Today it’s going really slow for some reason I think my IP is being throttled by the API.

Men Without Chests [somewhat NSFW language]

I read The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis and most of it went right over my head.  However he does talk about there being a third element in a man besides his brain and his carnal urges.  This third thing, the chest, consists of objective truths, Aristotelian virtues like duty, kindness, and temperance.  The thesis is modern society is stripping these things away and once these objective grounding truths are gone there is nothing standing in the way of propaganda swaying a person whichever way the masters’ please.  One can look at the approval of aid in dying that has jumped up precipitously (to 70%) in the last ten years.

Then there was this thing called the Tao which isn’t very specifically defined but has the feel of all the moral laws of traditional cultures east and west.  Basically what was instilled in people to keep them behaving.  But he would say there is something innate in man that interacts with these codes, like humankind were supposed to live like this.  Sexual taboos come to mind, like how even in ancient Egypt there were sex acts that were verboten that one had to answer for in their afterlife.  And of course the most important of these codes was the golden rule.  Societies that were taoless, like Nazi Germany, and Soviet Russia, didn’t have these things and propaganda took right over.

I look at morality like the tradition where the king stands up everybody else has to.  Morality is caught, not taught and cascades down to the powerless from the powerful.  What has taught me I was living in a taoless society is how the people and institutions in power (in my case mostly Christian ones) over me have treated me throughout the years.  As Eminem said in the song “Who Knew”, “You want me to fix up lyrics while the President gets his dick sucked?”.

Stop Animations

I found a good stop animations Chrome extension and I forked it on GitHub adding some improvements.  What I did works best on a PC, it will take more work to get it working right on all platforms.

Basically trying to engender a happy medium between ad blocking and viewing ads.  The plugin stops animations on web pages so you can actually read the content.  Of course this doesn’t solve the problem of malware coming through advertising networks.  I suspect that’s why most people use ad blockers.  But at least for trusted sites you could turn the ad blocker off and then stop the animations when they got too obtrusive.  The bonus of this plugin is because it takes a screenshot it also stops JavaScript animations like those items that auto scroll.

poetry about brains

success is just being better at your brain
than your brain is at you

your brain is not a muscle
in that things that strain your mental health generally don’t make you stronger
they just weaken you the way a concussion does
so that the next hit doesn’t have to be so hard to do the same amount of damage

(being exposed to the truth!)
things that exercise your brain
make it hurt
when it’s out of shape

your brain needs to be a perfect ten
to make religion work inside of/for you
(busts out the miss brain USA ribbon)
(God judges people by the brain they
were born with the same way men
judge women by their faces and bodies)
YOU need a fountain in your brain
chemicals running over
to make the cognitive tricks you play in the middle
so that you can sense God loving you
then you have to astroturf the bad things
and forgive the bad people
in your life
in an effort to make things make sense in hindsight
(of course romanticizing suffering is mainly done to
make those who suffer less [who generally have power]
comfortable with your suffering)
(forgiveness is just a cognitive trick you play to try to
get over a wrong while defering to the person who wrongs
[who generally has power])

people can bring you to religion
but only your brain can use it to find (conjure?) God!
(praise the brain!)

suffering coats your brain with teflon
so the stuff before it happened sticks
and the stuff afterwards just slides off

(for those trying to proselytize)
if you aren’t going to be the one there to
scrape my brains off the walls after i blow them out
your sales pitch doesn’t mean jack shit to me
